How to get here
The village of Malta is just 5 kms off the A10 motorway in Carinthia, Austria’s most southerly province. We are less than 80 kms from both Italy and Slovenia.
Our grid reference is N46 57.221 E13 30.481
By Road – Motorways from Germany/Salzburg (A10), Vienna/Graz (A2), Italy and Slovenia, all merging at the Villacherknoten (Villach Interchange). Leave the A10 Motorway at the exit for Gmünd/Maltatal and follow the signs for Maltatal. After the village of Fischertratten look for the National Park sign (large stone D shaped object) and go right there into Hilpersdorf, keeping the stone thing on your left. Through Hilpersdorf village bearing left at the centre and enter Malta itself. We are immediately before the church.
On summer weekends avoid the A10 Autobahn south of Salzburg. Traffic jams can be of epic proportions and, as they have traffic lights on the Autobahn, you can’t filter through on a bike either. Turn off south of Salzburg onto the B159 and then take the B99 all the way to Gmünd. It’s a fantastic route anyway and will actually take you less time than the Autobahn route, and save you the toll for the Tauern tunnels!
Motorcycle Transport
Colin & Jo offer door- to-door bike transport between the UK, Holland and our hotel at very reasonable rates compared to the costs of riding here (fuel, overnight stays and meals, tyres, ferry etc). You hand your bike and gear to them a few days before your holiday, take a ‘no frills’ flight to Klagenfurt, Salzburg or Ljubljana with just hand luggage, get a shuttle here and bike and gear are waiting. Repeat the procedure backwards for the return journey! Less stress and more time to enjoy our great roads! Contact Colin and Jo directly for further details and exact quotes.
For guests coming from Ireland:
offer a similarly helpful personal service from their base in Wexford with Ryanair flights available from Dublin, Cork, Knock, Derry or Shannon via Stansted. Derek and David Rynhart also organise bike tours to a range of detinations, including here!
By Rail – trains from Munich, Vienna, Salzburg, Italy to Klagenfurt, Villach, Spittal/Millstättersee etc http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp. Then bus to Gmünd and then Malta.
By Motorrail – the German motorrail service is a useful alternative. Trains travel fromvarious northern German destinations to Munich, Salzburg or Villach and are usually overnight, cutting both kilometres and stress from your journey south. There is a good English website and you can book online.
Public Transport – is plentiful and relatively cheap. Tickets for buses can be purchased on board. Timetables are available online http://www.postbus.at/en
Places to stop on the way – we have linked up with a number of other biker friendly guesthouses which we can recommend as stopover options. To find out more click on one of the blue pins in the map below or click to go to our ‘Partners‘ page.
