Cycling

Austria is a great place to get about on 2 wheels. There are cycle ways and cycle paths in most areas, and the low levels of traffic make it very safe even for those who normally stick to 4 wheels.

In the Maltatal, the cycle path follows the banks of the River Malta, making trips from Gmünd at one end to the Kölnbrein Dam at the other a possibility for all the family. Many of the other rivers in the region also have this facility – the Möll and the Lavant for instance.

Whilst the River Drau cycle path is famous all over Europe, if you don't want to cover all 366 kilometres of it, the section around Spittal is still worth doing.

Another 'easy' ride is around the shore of one of the beautiful lakes, many of which can be reached by public transport. Cycles are happily accepted on Austrian buses and trains and most of the bigger railway stations have facilities for hiring out bicycles of all shapes and sizes for any reasonable length of time.

At the hotel we also have a limited number of bicycles (NOT mountain bikes) which are free for our guests to borrow so you can sample the local routes without having to splash out on hire costs.

As well as the 'flat' paths, there are also lots of cycle ways that you can follow up and down the hillsides, which are accessible with mountain bikes but which don’t need you to be an experienced mountain biker. From the tourist information office in Gmünd you can even hire a GPS system so you don’t get lost!

All in all a great way to combine healthy activity with sightseeing and family fun.
