Fishing
Carinthia is an angler's paradise, with many clear, unpolluted streams and deep rivers and lakes. You can try for trout, char, pike, monster catfish, and pike-perch in well-stocked mountain streams.
The Wörthersee in Carinthia sometimes yields the North American big-mouth black bass, which once stocked the lake because of an accident by an owner of Velden Castle. Intended for a pond on his estate, one barrel fell into the lake and burst, introducing the immigrants from America to a new happy home.
The local tourist office in each province offers information about local fishing conditions and can advise you of the best local outfitters. Fishermen generally need two permits -- a general license issued by the state and a private permit from the local owner of the land.
Lake Millstättersee
Fishermen will find countless species of fish in the Millstättersee. Fishing is allowed according to Carinthian laws. Sport fishermen may well meet the challenge of catching char, trout, roach, barbel, carp, tench, catfish, pike, pike-perch (biggest pike-perch in 1995: 59 cm) and eel.
Visit the Seeboden fishing museum! 7,000 litre aquarium with all kinds of fresh water fish.
Fishing permits can be obtained from all tourist offices in the Millstättersee region.
Anglers who prefer still waters are in the right place at the Weissensee. Powan, lake trout, and more than 20 other species of fish thrive in this idyllic lake with their largely untouched shores. Very large catches are however also possible at the Presseggersee.
