Horse Riding

There are over 1,500 kilometres of well-signposted bridle paths and more than 80 stables and farms catering specially for riders in Carinthia – a real haven for horse riding enthusiasts.

Nowhere else are horse lovers more in their element than here – be they leisurely trekkers, enthusiastic young riders, experienced competitors or polo players - riding is such a popular sport in the province.

Carinthia is described as an 'El Dorado' for riding: between the Wörthersee, the Ossiachersee and the Nocky Mountains – as riders fondly call the Nockberge National Park area – there are long stretches of beautiful rolling countryside just waiting to be explored.

The bridle paths go though lush meadows and unspoiled forests, up into the hills and down to the water, past mighty castles and humble farmsteads – simply ideal for rediscovering the fine nuances of nature.

And because riding does not mean the same thing to everyone, all disciplines, levels of expertise and age groups are catered for. Trekkers, alpine or western riders will all find something to suit. What’s more, the bridle paths are constantly being extended.

And in Carinthia riding is not just a summer activity – winter alpine riding through untouched fields of white is another great experience not to be missed. And if being in the saddle isn’t quite your style then horse drawn sleigh rides through the snow or carriage rides amongst the autumn colours can also be arranged!

Many of the local stables keep the popular Haflinger breed, so much a part of the Austrian landscape and with lovely temperaments suitable for nervous riders.
