Ice Climbing

Due to climatic conditions in the upper valley the waterfalls, for which the area is famous, freeze solid each winter.

There are 16 falls that can be climbed although some can only be reached by a section of the road that is officially closed in winter. Ice climbers are not so easily put off and can be found on various ascents. All levels of climbers will find something to excite.

Remember that most of the falls are on private land. Local landowners welcome ice climbers because these visitors respect their property. In order that this convenient arrangement continues please park responsibly and don't wander away from the falls.

Each January a weekend celebration of ice climbing is held in our village. Malta plays host to climbers from all over Europe.

The Gasthof Hochalmspitze makes an ideal base from which to climb in the upper valley. Our cosy bar and restaurant are welcome at the end of an active day. Good food, a well earned glass of wine or a beer and a comfortable nights sleep will prepare you for the next challenge.
