Mountain Biking

Where better to mountain bike than Austria? Great weather, great facilities and great scenery – it’s a no-brainer really!

Mountain biking is very popular here and the range and standard of the routes available to follow (over 1000 kilometres in the surrounding areas) demonstrate this. All the local tourist information centres have maps and advice leaflets and whether you want an all day trip of just a few hours before finding somewhere to relax in the sun, Carinthia has just the route for you.

Why not try something really special and go on the underground route through an abandoned mine near the Slovenian border or try one of the 43 different routes within the confines of the Nockberge National Park.

Bike information centres, service centres and hire points (bikes and safety equipment) are everywhere and you can choose between self guided touring or joining one of the many guided tours available.

Here are just a few examples of how organised it all is:

  • 11 new, signposted mountainbiking routes/Weissensee
  • New, 3 km long technique course at Lake Weissensee
  • Mountain bike transport with the Millennium Express cable cars to the Nassfeld and with the Weissensee cable cars to the Naggler Alm
  • Lift & Bike Giro – comfortable transport with the Millennium Express to the Madritsche at 1,919 metres. Descent by mountain bike to the Tressdofer Alm pasture (exhibition cheese dairy) or to Sonnenalpe Nassfeld and further down to the valley.

Bikes are welcome on public transport and on all the cable cars and lake ferries and there is even a 'Bike Taxi' available from April to October to get you to the start of some of the tours and the Post Bus will also double as a ‘bicycle bus’ to get you where you want to go.

If you are more of a spectator than a participant, look out for the many cycling events and competitions that take place in the area over the summer months.
